Workshop: Graffiti: “Express Yourself”
This workshop would begin by discussing how the history of graffiti came about in New York City and how it was the first form of expression that was created by youth, which is now found worldwide as an art movement. Graffiti has given the youth a voice where it did not have one before. After explaining the basis of graffiti as we know it today, Anjl will do a live demonstration on handstyles and lettering such as a basic bubble letter. Then she will open up the workshop for the participants to create their own graffiti and tags, along with a group art for the university to have after the workshop concludes. In conclusion, workshop participants can discuss how this form of expression can be developed further to motivate the youth for positive creations.
Anjl started painting graffiti in 2002 when she was in Hong Kong. She would later paint in New York, Spain, and the Midwest. Anjl continued painting for a few years at Five Pointz, Queens, and went back to Spain in 2011. That year she expanded to attempt different styles, and aside from graffiti letters, she started painting more characters and then tried portraits on canvas as well. The past few years, she has developed and experimented with murals and continues attempting new ideas each time. By becoming a graffiti writer, she has come to know herself as an artist of different forms, originating in lettering and continuing to expand her styles in urban arts. She has exhibited work in Brooklyn and Manhattan and will show a couple of pieces August 5-7 2016, at the Living Gallery, as part of the Annual Art Show with Spread Art NY.
