Workshop: DJ Perspective --
"Hip Hop: From Community to Corporations"
The purpose of the workshop is to illustrate the intentions of the founders of what became Hip Hop culture. Contrary to what is current, Hip Hop was developed to be a deterrent to crime and violence. It offered an alternative way of expressing oneself without the use of violence, by dancing in an aggressive manner to vent some of the frustrations that came about as a result of living in desolate conditions. The workshop addresses several different phases of the growth of Hip Hop and many of the turning points to address how far the culture has come and deviated from the original manuscript. Overall the workshop is geared to remind all of what the Hip Hop is, how it originated, the changes it has gone through, and what we need to do in the 21st century to maintain and cultivate it.
DJ IDAI is from New York, now living outside the Washington DC area, and the culture of Hip Hop is responsible for much of what became who he is today. He has been a DJ for over 30 years. He has spun at clubs and venues from New York to North Carolina. In the tradition of what it meant to be a DJ, he still continues to search for artist that aren't popular but still make great music. He has witnessed the birth, development and exploitation of the culture of Hip Hop. DJ IDAI has presented at Columbia University on the music and culture of Hip Hop. He feels it is imperative to inform both adults and youth of what Hip Hop culture is. He is currently a teacher, and plays his part in educating the youth about the history of the culture as much as he can in his day to day life.
