Workshop – Spoken Word- “I Love Myself” Workshop

This workshop aims to empower students through both poetry and hip-hop by allowing them to self-reflect and comment on the ways they could improve society. Participants will work on individual and group pieces to present. They will learn about the style and flow in a spoken word piece. Reflection, honesty, self and personal & group creations will be the focus.

Katherine George is a Dominican performer, director, writer, and educator from the Bronx, NY. She has been performing since the age of six. She has been blessed with the opportunity of performing in various venues around the country including the Apollo Theater, Bowery Poetry Club, and Carnegie Hall, the New Amsterdam Theater on Broadway, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, and Radio City Music Hall. She was a member of the 2012 Urban Word Slam team which participated in the international poetry festival, Brave New Voices. She has also been a member of the award-winning Brooklyn College Poetry Slam team since its inception in 2011 and has been named the Grand Slam Champion in both 2014 and 2015. She debuted her one-woman show, "Tundra and Other Dry Lands" (directed by award winning choreographer/director Nicco Annan) at New York Live Arts and as well as Wild Project Theater's, Poetic License Festival. She co-coached the Urban Word 2013 national slam team which ranked 3rd in the world. She was also the co-coach of the Urban Word 2014 team and a proud member of the first-ever all-female slam team representing the Nuyorican Poets Cafe that same year.
Most recently she has obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Theater from Brooklyn College where she partnered up with another student to create the play “Black and Blue” which has recently been accepted and will go up in this years’ International Fringe Festival. She has also been accepted into Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation’ 2016-2017 Observership Program which allow early career directors and choreographers to work with Off-Broadway and Broadways top directors in their upcoming productions. She has also recently become a resident actor, known as a Bat, at the award-winning Flea Theater. Katherine plans to continue performing and using literary and performance pedagogy to reach young adults. After experiencing it firsthand, Katherine believes art can change lives and looks forward to transforming others through all forms art and expression.
