Workshop: Emceeing: “How Dope Can You Go?”
A deeper look at lyrics in today’s rap music and the stereotypes they create. Let’s take a moment to deconstruct these message that are being sent to us in today’s “hip hop” music. What is it the mainstream is trying to push and convey? Why is it we embrace emcees & artists such as J Cole and Kendrick Lamar that use lyrical maturity to transcend what the mainstream hopes to send as the message into something larger for us to hold on to, and ultimately inspires us? This workshop will examine and have an open forum of discussion about lyrics of some of today’s most popular, and those historically popular in hip hop, and the messages & stereotypes they create or breakdown. Do we create the culture or is the culture creating us now?
